About SailGP
SailGP, officially the Rolex SailGP Championship, is an annual international sailing competition featuring national teams racing high performance F50 Catamarans.
The series consists of multiple grands prix held at venues around the world, with teams earning points at each event toward an overall season championship. Races are designed to be short, fast-paced, and spectator-friendly, showcasing cutting-edge sailing technology.
The Project
SailGP needed a mobile app where users could register an account and personalise their experience by selecting a favourite team and receiving relevant news and updates.
Another big push for this project, was the ability to watch the events on-the-go via your phone. Previously, you could only watch SailGP at events, or on the TV.
The AR/VR elements were added later on, to immerse our viewers into the action even more. By projecting the racecourse onto the users device - they can see the boat positions, speed and more stats in real time on the comfort of their own sofa. Users can also walk around an F50 boat they can project right in front of them anytime, anywhere.
Design Process
Understand who our users are and find out their pain points.
01 Empathise
Defining potential solutions to said pain points, and defining what the product we're going to deliver is truly going to be and include.
02 Define
Based on what we've discovered so far - coming up with different options and ideas for the layout, functionality and overall UX flow.
03 Ideate
I will take the best ideas and throw them into a working prototype, typically on Figma.
04 Prototype
I will test via the prototype and monitor how users interact with it and if their behaviour is expected and if they like the product.
05 Test
Based on the testing phase will be if it goes ahead for development or goes through a round of iteration and testing again.

User Persona

Information Architecture
I knew I needed to create a flow that was intuitive and easy to use. By keeping the flow as uncluttered as possible, it eliminates the risk of users being confused or giving up on trying to find the information they need.

Demo: F50 Boat
User scans their environment and places the boat in front of them on a (ideally flat) surface. They can then pinch, zoom and marvel at the detailed boat model.
In the future, there will be touchpoint where a user can learn more about specific parts of the boat and what they do.

Demo: Replay Race View
When a user can't get to their phone or have enough time to watch a race, they can watch a replay race via the app.
Not only is this extremely customisable (3 viewing layouts and 28 camera angles), but very tech and data heavy. It pulls a whopping 100,000+ bits of data from each boat every second of the race and pulls them into visual graphics, charts and maps.

Outcomes + Future Steps
There has been a great response from SailGP fans across the board regarding the app.
In future seasons, there will be updates and new features added to the app to provide fans with an even more in-depth experience. From an interactive 3D F50 model, to more educational pieces and more content pushed onto the app to keep fans in the loop and engaged.
There will be bigger pushes for the On-Site, Social Media and Marketing teams to advertise the app to make sure it continues to grow and excel in the sports-tech field.
